Low Dose Ionising Radiation-Induced Hormesis: Therapeutic Implications to Human Health
نویسندگان
چکیده
The concept of radiation-induced hormesis, whereby a low dose is beneficial and high detrimental, has been gaining attention in the fields molecular biology, environmental toxicology radiation biology. There growing body literature that recognises importance hormetic response not only field, but also with agents. However, there continuing debate on magnitude mechanism response, which could make further contributions, as research tool, to science perhaps eventually public health due potential therapeutic benefits for society. biological phenomena ionising (LDIR) includes bystander effects, adaptive hypersensitivity, radioresistance genomic instability. In this review, detrimental effects LDIR-induced hormesis are explored, together an overview its underlying cellular mechanisms may potentially provide insight implications human future.

Effects of Low-Dose Ionising Radiation
Recent years there have been a number of discussions about the magnitude of the health risks resulting from the exposure to low levels of ionising radiation mainly within the American Health Physics Society, the French Academy of Sciences and the Canadian Radiation Protection Association. Essentially, the debate has centred on the question of linearity, i.e., whether to assume that the probabil...
متن کاملRadiation hormesis and adoptive response induced by low doses of limiting radiation
Ionizing radiation has long been known to produce detrimental biological effects. Although these harmful effects are the results of high doses of exposure, some other maladies such as mutation and cancer seems to be induced at low doses of exposure. In recent decades, however, some pioneer scientists have indicated that ionizing radiation like many other essential agents has toxic effects ...
متن کاملLow-dose radiation induces antitumor effects and erythrocyte system hormesis.
OBJECTIVE Low dose radiation may stimulate the growth and development of animals, increase life span, enhance fertility, and downgrade the incidence of tumor occurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate the antitumor effect and hormesis in an erythrocyte system induced by low-dose radiation. METHODS Kunming strain male mice were subcutaneously implanted with S180 sarcoma cells in the r...
متن کاملRadiation hormesis: historical perspective and implications for low-dose cancer risk assessment.
Current guidelines for limiting exposure of humans to ionizing radiation are based on the linear-no-threshold (LNT) hypothesis for radiation carcinogenesis under which cancer risk increases linearly as the radiation dose increases. With the LNT model even a very small dose could cause cancer and the model is used in establishing guidelines for limiting radiation exposure of humans. A slope chan...
متن کاملNuclear energy and health: and the benefits of low-dose radiation hormesis.
Energy needs worldwide are expected to increase for the foreseeable future, but fuel supplies are limited. Nuclear reactors could supply much of the energy demand in a safe, sustainable manner were it not for fear of potential releases of radioactivity. Such releases would likely deliver a low dose or dose rate of radiation, within the range of naturally occurring radiation, to which life is al...
